Hi - I'm Ashleigh! Many of you may know me from a few years ago when Second Nature Teaching was primarily an English teacher blog. I spent 7 years in the English classroom, sparking a love of reading and writing in my middle and high school students until it finally happened: burn out. I was miserable, overworked, underappreciated, and it was seeping into areas of my personal life.
So as one should do in these situations, I pivoted. And I pivoted hard. I now work with Gifted and Talented students, teaching them to love problem solving and innovation. I'm on a mission to spread the word and help other teachers to foster this same love in their students.
I am absolutely convinced that while the education system favours teaching content over life-skills, it's just a fact that kids are way less likely to remember the content they cram into their brains before a test, and so much more likely to remember the skills they learnt along the way. So why aren't we focusing more of our attention on those skills?
My favourite skill to teach is, of course, problem solving. I believe that problem-solving isn't just a subject—it's a superpower that will make our kids so much more prepared to tackle life, careers, relationships, parenthood.
So, if you're a teacher looking to infuse a little more problem-solving into your classroom, you've come to the right place! Join me on this journey as we dive into the world of critical problem-solving. I'll be here, sharing ideas, resources, and tips to creative lifelong problem solvers.
Stay tuned for more problem-solving magic coming your way!
